Silicone is not only a safe material for baby’s bottle teats but it is also used for other purposes like medical and cooking for not containing any harmful toxins such as BPA, BPS, phthalates or microplastics. Silicone is a 100% non-allergic material and there are no existing records of babies being allergic to silicone bottle teats. Silicone is resistant to high temperatures which allows it to be sterilised easily and efficiently.
Baby bottle teats can either be made of silicone or latex. Silicone bottle teats are more durable and don’t retain any flavours or odours, different from latex bottle teats. Silicone bottle teats are also safer and more hygienic as it is less porous than latex, which makes it better at resisting from bacterias. It is the most common material for bottle teats and the easiest to find in the market.
Yes, silicone bottle teats can and should be sterilised before every use. Before starting the sterilising process, make sure to wash them with a harsh chemicals free detergent like the Pigeon Liquid Cleanser and rinse under running water. You can sterilise you baby bottle teats by: Using boiling water: place the bottle teats in a large pan filled with water and let boil for 5 minutes. Using a microwave steriliser: put the bottle teats in the container, add 100ml of water and put in the microwave for 7 minutes on high power. Using an electric UV Steriliser.
It is recommended to replace bottle teats every 2 to 3 months of use. However, it is recommended to check the teats regularly and change them immediately if there is any sign of weakness or damage like cracks or tears, that could result in small broken pieces and become a choking hazard to the baby while he is being fed.
